When Charles Lindbergh flew from New York to Paris it was the worlds first solo trans-Atlantic flight, he not only stunned the world, he opened the skies to commercial air transportation. With his plane, The Spirit of St. Louis, Lindbergh proved to all who had doubted that air travel was going to shrink the globe.
After Lindberghs rousing welcome in Europe, The Spirit of St. Louis was dismantled and shipped back to the United States, where it was reassembled and flown by Lindbergh on tours that were designed to promote aeronautics. The tour began at Mitchel Field, Long Island, on July 20, 1927. By the time Lindbergh and the Spirit returned to Mitchel field three months later, he had made 82 stops covering 22,000 miles in 260 hours and 45 minutes of flying time. The age of air transportation was solidly here.
